Backwater cruises

Colossal, leisurely moving, alluring boats are used for leisure trips. In local language they are called Kettuvalams meaning a boat tied with ropes. They are made by joining wooden planks with strong coconut fiber ropes and are painted in cashew nut oil that work as a protective covering.

With a width of about 15 feets and length of 70 feets a barge is big enough to accommodate a family. Normally a boat has twin air-conditioned bedrooms, bathrooms, lounge cum dinning area, sunbath deck and Kitchen where fresh produce from lakes is brought and cooked in front of the guest.

Usually a houseboat has a crew of three people comprising of oarsmen, a cook and guide. Some packages also include ayurvedic massages and yoga classes on board the cruise.

The tour always includes a peek into the lives of villagers living besides these backwaters. It can be anything from wafting through paddy field, to seeing men making coir ropes and handicrafts and women fishing in backwaters or breezing through coconut groves and grazing through lilies and seeing butterflies fluttering over flowers.

The cruise takes break at places of historical importance, monuments, temples, bazaars or markets etc lying on the way so that guest can alight and do local sight seeing.

The resplendent and ornate sunsets, dazzling night skies lit with thousands of stars, calls of aquatic birds, splash of river waves, fresh breeze, organic food and above all relaxing and soothing ambience make the backwater tours the ultimate tourism destination in otherwise photo chromatic Kerala.
